Last Saturday, we held the 1st ever Mensa Poker Tourney. We had 10 players compete for the the title of “THE 1st MENSA POKER TOUR CHAMPION”. The game was organized by fellow Mensan and our official tournament director, Hermie Dela Paz.
It was a really fun event as i got to meet more mensans for the first time. Some of the attendees admitted that this was the first event that they ever attended. There was Z. who everyone kept teasing because he looked like he was under 18. Maybe we should nickname him “babyface”.
Also in attendance was Danilo, who wants to be called “Dan” after he busted out that day.
But the interesting story is actually, Gerel, who, not only, was the last one to show up to the game, but now has the unenviable title of “the 1st BUST OUT on the 1st HAND during the 1st MENSA POKER TOUR”.
Jepoy, who now wants to be called Jeff, played it tight with a modest goal of just making top 5, and sure enough he did!
Hermie was basically just trying to keep up with the basic game play and getting help from his seat mate, Mike Calunsod, who is unarguably is one of the more seasoned poker players in the table, playing live games at Metro Club. Mike was one of my nemesis on the table, pushing me all-in and reraising me from time to time. Cats also showed up with her game face on, but unfortunately she couldn’t catch any hands so she busted out fairly early. There was also Spencer, who unknowingly became my personal ATM at the table, calling almost any bet that i would throw out.
My other nemesis on the table was Lel, who called my preflop raise with Ace-10. I had Ace-King. Flop was Axx and when i bet out, he calls me, then the turn shows a 10, giving him his 2nd pair, and he bets out and i push him all-in. Lel pretty much took most of the chips that i made from the other players, building himself a fairly healthy chipstack early on.
Alain, who just wanted to learn the game, was more than happy to be the dealer for the table. Until Cats busted out and insisted on being the dealer for the rest of the game. I thought to myself, “hmmm… thats really nice of Cats to volunteer to deal for everyone.” Prior to Cats dealing, mike was relatively short in chips. Then suddenly, he started to pick up hands and started accumulating chips to eventually bust people out and become the chip leader. hehehe…. i’m not trying to imply anything here. Mike is a really good player and he is one of the more seasoned players on the table.
Anyway, the game came down to me and mike going heads up. He had a 2 to 1 chip lead over me with the blinds still relatively manageable, so all i needed to do was double up once and i would gain the chip lead. i picked up 75 on the button and he had 36. I just limped in to see the flop and the flop showed Q65. Mike checks and I bet out with my bottom pair. He decides to call it with his midpair. Turn hits 7 giving me my second pair. I trapped him by checking and he bet out. I reraised him 3x his bet and he calls. I had only a few hundred chips left and the river shows another 6. I didnt have much left and just went all-in to lose to his set. hehehe… Nice deal, Cats.
Congrats to Mike Calunsod. The 1st Mensa Poker Tour Champion!!!!! Congrats and thank you to Hermie for putting together his 1st successful poker event! Watch out for the next poker event! I wonder who the next champion will be….
